NCERT Class 8 Math Syllabus - Concept Ladder

This page uses a concept ladder format where each chapter group is a rung that supports the next. Climbing the ladder in order builds strong transition readiness for Class 9 and Class 10 maths.

Rung 1

Numbers and operations base.

Rung 2

Proportions, fractions, and ratios.

Rung 3 and 4

Algebra, then geometry and measurement.

Chapter groups

Four-rung ladder for chapter progression

1Numbers and Power Play

Builds number intuition and pattern reasoning that feeds into Class 9 Number Systems and polynomials.

  • Power Play
  • A Story of Numbers
  • Number Play

2Proportions, Fractions and Distribution

Prepares ratio, proportion, and fraction fluency needed in Class 9 Statistics and Class 10 Linear Equations.

  • Proportional Reasoning-1
  • We Distribute, Yet Things Multiply
  • Fractions in Disguise
  • Proportional Reasoning-2

3Algebra

Builds algebraic thinking and identity manipulation that unlock Class 9 Polynomials and Class 10 Quadratic Equations.

  • A Square and A Cube
  • Algebra Play

4Geometry and Measurement

Supports Class 9 Geometry, Heron's Formula, and Class 10 Mensuration and coordinate chapters.

  • Quadrilaterals
  • The Baudhayana–Pythagoras Theorem
  • Exploring Some Geometric Themes
  • Tales by Dots and Lines
  • Area

Practice prompts

Turn each rung into a timed practice cycle

Prompt 1

Generate a ladder drill: 4 questions on power play and number patterns, 4 on proportional reasoning, and 4 on the Pythagoras theorem.

Prompt 2

Create a mixed algebra worksheet with square and cube identities, expression simplification, and substitution questions.

Prompt 3

Ask for a geometry and area revision set covering quadrilaterals, geometric themes, and area calculations with stepwise solutions.

Why sequence matters

Revise number sense before algebra, algebra before geometry

Jumping straight to algebra or geometry chapters without solid number sense and proportional reasoning underneath is where most Class 8 confusion starts — shaky basics make every later identity or construction harder than it needs to be. Work the ladder in order: number sense first, then proportions and fractions, then algebra, then geometry.

Several of these rungs resurface directly in Class 9 and Class 10 — revising them properly now means less re-learning from scratch later, rather than short-term memorisation you'll need to redo next year.
